安徽位于中国东南腹地，华东西北部，南北分别有长江、淮河横贯，自北而南有淮北平原，江淮丘陵皖中平原，皖南山地。安徽的古民居多集中于皖南地区古徽州的一府六县（黟县、歙县休宁、祁门，绩溪、婺源）。因其相对闭塞的地理位置，形成了具有鲜明地域特色的"徽文化"古村落群。

江西简称"赣"，位于长江中下游南岸，以山地，丘陵为主。地势周高中低，由南向北倾斜，宛如开口朝北的盆地。由于复杂的地理人文环境，江西形成了多种特色鲜明的古村落。赣北婺源地区的古村落多属青山围绕、碧水环抱、粉墙黛瓦的徽式建筑。
